When Did This Happen?

So, it's St. Patrick's Day and the corned beef simmers while the shamrock-shaped cookies bake. All this is happening here, in my kitchen. Since when did the Korean-American girl celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Since I became a Mormon Housewife -- that's when. Ok, so maybe a little later than that -- like when S started First Grade and theses things became supremely important to him, or maybe when I got a really good, fail-safe sugar cookie recipe from a neighbor. Who can say? All I know is that St. Patrick's Day didn't have much meaning in my family growing up. Sure, we did the corned beef and cabbage (though, as an adult and the grocery shopper now, we skip the cabbage and substitute potatoes instead -- that's Irish enough, right?), but that was mostly because my mom was (and is) a foodie and just loved corned beef. Anyway, our kind of St. Patrick's Day celebration is better than one of my friend's in high school's -- his dad took him to a bar (wearing his Fightin' Irish shirt) and got him drunk. High school's no fun with a hangover. Anyway, it's ok that we're Irish for a day, right? Those little halfies running around my house must've inherited some Irish blood from their mutt-dad, right? Regardless, it's a great day for corned beef and green shamrock cookies!
